Essentially English July Events

London is at its best in July: the city’s verdant parks are filled with picnickers, the clouds of spring have (mostly) fled, and the warmth means it’s possible to spend the whole day relaxing out of doors. Perhaps best of all, the city’s summer calendar is fit to bursting with events, ranging from flower shows to competitive cricket matches. Guests staying at our Egerton House Hotel in Central London are perfectly placed to get out and about with our favourite July events:

Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
9th-14th July
Back for its 23rd year, the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show is paradise for gardeners, growers, and horticultural enthusiasts. Over 600 exhibitors will be in attendance this year, and special sights are set to include everything from a rose marquee and plant village to eight conceptual gardens. As a bonus, a preview evening on the 8th will include live music and fireworks.

Goodwood Festival of Speed
11th-14th July
Billed as “the largest motoring garden party in the world,” the Goodwood Festival of Speed combines exquisite racing cars, celebrities from the automotive world, and all the lavish perks that go along with a summer weekend garden party. This year’s festival theme celebrates Goodwood’s 20th anniversary. While the famed hillclimb is the main event of the weekend, other highlights will include an aviation exhibition and vehicle displays.

The Ashes at Lords
18th – 22nd July
Cricket fans are nervously counting down to the Ashes at Lords, one of the cricketing world’s fiercest and most exciting rivalries. Since 1882, the Ashes test cricket series has seen the English and the Australian teams battle it out for top spot (the series began after the Australian team beat England on British soil for the first time). Lord’s Cricket Ground, located in St. Johns Wood and known as “the home of cricket,” will play host to the highly anticpated match.

Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup
18th -21st July
Since 1956, the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup has been a season highlight for sporting enthusiasts, polo followers, and those among us who enjoy donning elaborate hats and drinking champagne en plein air. Held at the Cowdray Park Polo Club in West Sussex, which has hosted top polo events for nigh on a century, the Gold Cup’s Semi-Final will be held on the 18th while the Final is slated for 21st.

Opera Holland Park
Through July
London’s favourite summer opera company is back this year with a brand new season of open-air performances. Held under a tented canopy in West London, Opera Holland Park’s July performances will include four different operas. Guests can take in Les Pêcheurs de Perles by Bizet, l’Elisir d’Amore by Donizetti, I Gioielli della Madonna by Wolf-Ferrari, and Todd’s family-friendly Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, all in the balmy summer air.
