Dorset’s Vintage Motors: Inside Haynes International Motor Museum

1915 Ford Model T

The Ford Model T, also known as the Tin Lizzie, was one of the world’s first affordable cars. Credited with making motoring more accessible to the public, the model was produced 15 million times between 1908 and 1927. This 1915 motor is one of the earlier versions and features the Model T’s iconic black paint, which was the only colour available for several years.

1938 Morgan Super Sport

A producer of sports cars since 1910, Morgan Motor Company is the last remaining family-owned British motoring manufacturer. Morgan is famous for its traditional styles, handmade production methods and three-wheeled designs. The 1938 Morgan Super Sport is instantly recognisable for its barrel-shaped rear, which was constructed to house the spare wheel.

1957 Jaguar Mark VIII

The 1957 Jaguar Mk VIII is the second edition of Jaguar’s revolutionary Mark VII – IX range, a collection of cars produced at the end of WII with a sleeker post-war design. As well as featuring modern styling on the surface and the new 3442cc XK engine inside, the Mark VIII was the first Jaguar to be offered with a dual colour scheme.

1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet

This 1960 cabriolet was the second generation of Ferrari’s 250 GT. While it resembled the 250 GT Coupe in style, only 200 cabriolets were made. Each was different from the last and the vehicles were tailored to the customer’s specifications. This model was finished in Ferrari’s famous ‘Rosso Corsa’ racing red paint, with stylish beige interiors – clearly commissioned by someone with taste.

1973 Porsche 911 Rs Carrera Touring

After garnering some success in the world of motor racing with its 550 Spyder, Porsche launched the Porsche 911. Taking of the rear-engine design of its previous models, this new sports car model was updated with a six-cylinder engine. The 1973 Porsche 911 Rs Carrera Touring is a prime example of this iconic range, which became one of the world’s best-loved racing cars.

1978 British Leyland Mini Prototype

A guide to vintage motors in Britain wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Mini. The 1978 British Leyland Mini Prototype is a symbolic model because it was the last car designed before the British Motor Holdings – Leyland Motor Corporation merger. It was designed by Alec Issigonis in a way that made it smaller and lighter than other Mini motors, while also being more spacious inside. The model never went to production, however, making this prototype even more special.
