In celebration of Earth Month, the team at Bushmans Kloof have shared six simple steps which you can incorporate into your day-to-day lives to help conserve and protect the earth!

1. Grow vegetables and compost organic waste
Grow your own vegetables and make compost from organic waste. It reduces carbon emissions and is very rewarding too!

At Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, vegetables, fruit and herbs are grown organically using the square foot gardening method and the produce by the chefs to prepare dishes on a daily basis.

2. Save water
Sometimes it is the simplest thing which can have an impact, such as turning off the tap whilst brushing your teeth, making your shower shorter (whilst still keeping fresh!) and always ensuring your washing machine and dishwasher have full loads before turning them on.

The team always  water the garden during the early morning or late afternoon for the least amount of evaporation and ensure any leaking taps and pipes are kept up-to-date.

3. Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
A great way to stay green and keep fit is to cycle to work instead of spending hours in peak hour traffic or if not try a carpool with colleagues and share the driving responsibilities.

Use less heat and air conditioning by turning down the heat when you’re sleeping and keeping a constant moderate temperature throughout the day.

Plant a tree; they absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen – at Bushmans Kloof 150 cedar trees are planted every year!

4. Save electricity
Taking inspiration from Earth Hour there is nothing more romantic than switching off the lights and enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner. Do this often; it’s good for your relationship as well as the environment.

For the times when light bulbs are necessary, buy energy-efficient products and replace regular light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. Turn off the lights when you leave a room and don’t forget to turn off all appliances when you leave the house or are not using them.

5. Eat lower down the food chain and go organic
Eat less meat and more vegetables which come from responsible organic sources; ie those who do not use herbicides and pesticides. Cattle farming is a major source of carbon emissions which increases global warming.

6. Reduce, reuse and recycle
Every new product you purchase has some sort of impact on the environment. To create these products, minerals are mined and the manufacturing process consumes energy and water. Buy second hand reuse products where possible.

Recycle glass, paper and plastic to reduce waste.
